From Refugees to Champions: How One Community is Empowering Displaced Individuals to Excel

One of the most pressing issues of our time is the worldwide refugee crisis. Millions of people are forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, or economic turmoil and must seek refuge in other countries. The challenges refugees face go beyond just finding a safe place to live – they must also navigate cultural differences, language barriers, and discrimination. Yet, there are stories of hope and resilience.

One such story comes from Zug, Switzerland, where a community has taken it upon themselves to empower displaced individuals to excel. The Zug International Women’s Club (ZIWC) started a program called Empowering Women to Excel (EWE), which focuses on providing education, training, and mentorship to refugees and other displaced women.

The program’s success can be seen in the women who have participated in it. Many of them have gone on to start their own businesses or secure well-paying jobs. Through the mentorship program, they have also gained confidence, a sense of belonging, and an understanding of Swiss culture. The program is not just about helping these women improve their economic situation, but also about integrating them into society and giving them a sense of purpose.

The effort has not gone unnoticed. The EWE program was awarded the Zug Integration Prize in 2020, recognizing its significant impact on the local community. In addition, the program has attracted the attention of other Swiss cities and organizations, leading to the development of similar initiatives.

The success of the Zug program highlights the potential for communities to take a proactive approach to supporting refugees and displaced individuals. It also showcases the importance of collaboration between different stakeholders, including community organizations, government agencies, and corporations.

As the world continues to face the complex challenges of migration, it is stories like these that give hope for a better future. The EWE program is a shining example of how individuals and communities can make a real difference in the lives of those who are displaced. It shows that with the right support, refugees can go from simply surviving to thriving.
