Particularly in the context of the current pandemic, corruption scandals have highlighted the pitiful allocation of public resources and the inadequate protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
However, many efforts are being made to counteract corruption. Multi-sectoral coalitions actively participate in demanding better public policies and institutional frameworks, promoting good practices, and fostering transparency. In addition, several countries have enacted legal frameworks that protect whistleblowers, journalists, and human rights defenders who investigate and report corruption cases.
Moreover, good governance practices, structural reforms, and anti-corruption measures are crucial elements to foster sustainable development. For example, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, promoted by the United Nations, establishes as a cross-cutting issue the need to assure responsible, transparent, and inclusive governance. The Agenda also includes specific targets to strengthen institutions, foster participation, and ensure accountability.
In conclusion, cutting corruption is a critical step for building a brighter and more inclusive future. Governments, civil society organizations, businesses, and the media must coordinate their efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption measures. The benefits of a more just and sustainable society are evident for all, and they deeply rely on the commitment and proactive action of all members of society.
